A relative of a Toronto player has died in a shooting in the Canadian province of Ontario.


The incident occurred in the city of Vaughn, located 30 kilometers from Toronto. A gunman armed with a semi-automatic pistol opened fire at a residence and killed five people. The police killed the attacker.


The Maple Leafs said one of the people killed in the shooting was defenseman Victor Mete`s maternal grandfather, 79-year-old Vittorio Panza. His companion, Rita Camilleri, 57, was also killed.


The Toronto Maple Leafs are shocked and saddened by the tragic shooting that occurred in Vaughn this past Sunday. Our hearts go out to Victor and his family, to all the families and friends of the victims, as well as to the local community, " the NHL club said in a statement.


Before the game via football livescore between Toronto and Tampa (4-1), a moment of silence was held in memory of the victims of the shooting. Mete did not take part in this game.


After the meeting, Canadian head coach Sheldon Keefe spoke about the incident.


Our thoughts are with him and his family. Obviously it hit us a little harder because we know Victor. But I mean, it`s a tragedy.


Our thoughts are with all the families impacted by this. This is incredibly, incredibly tragic. Of course, right now I feel for Victor and his family, " Keefe said.
